This morning, Maariv looks ahead to Trump’s visit next week, suggesting that the US administration will make the relocation of their embassy to Jerusalem conditional on advances in negotiations with the Palestinians. Haaretz refers to this as a “public disagreement with the US”. Whilst Israel Hayom highlight the Prime Minister’s message that relocating the embassy will promote peace.
Israel Hayom covers the ongoing diplomatic tension between Israel and Jordan, following the death of a Jordanian citizen who attacked a police officer in the Old City of Jerusalem over the weekend. While Israel Radio reports Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinians have stepped up their coordination ahead of a possible resumption of the peace process. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, and top Palestinian Authority official Saeb Erekat met in Amman and issued a statement about their shared commitment to peace, which they called the strategic choice of the Arabs.
Israel Hayom and Yediot Ahronot discuss the launch of the public broadcasting corporation that will go on air for the first time later this afternoon.
Yediot Ahronot and Maariv both prominently cover “show of hatred” as football “fans” from Maccabi Tel Aviv hold a mock funeral as their city rivals Hapoel are relegated. Maariv also highlights incitement by ultra-orthodox men who during their celebration of Lag B’Omer burnt an effigy of IDF soldiers in order to offend ultra-orthodox soldiers. Commenting at the cabinet meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Netanyahu said: “This was deplorable. IDF soldiers guard everyone, including the ultra-orthodox, including these people. I expect, request and demand that all public leaders condemn this despicable act and I also request that the police find those responsible.”
Yediot Ahronot cover a demand by the Knesset that 1,600 police officers should take a lie detector test. This is an initiative led by the police chief that targets all senior officers above the rank of commissioner.
Maariv on Sunday cover the arrest of the assassin who killed Mazen Fuqaha in Gaza. According to Arab social media, they name Ashraf Abu Leila, himself a former member of Hamas’s military wing. They claim he joined one of the extremist Salafist groups, before being recruited by Israeli intelligence.
