Assad using crematoria to hide atrocities

[ssba]

The Times reports that Sheldon Adelson, one of the largest donors to US President Donald Trump’s election campaign, has expressed anger at the President for not delivering on his promise to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The Guardian features an essay by Nathan Thrall from the International Crisis Group that attributes the failure of Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations to a preference for stalemate over an agreement, arguing that “Israel prefers the fallback option to the peace agreement”.

The Financial Times reports that Tehran Mayor Baqer Qalibaf has dropped out of Iran’s presidential race and is now backing hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi.

All the Israeli media report on US State Department findings that the Assad regime in Syria are using crematoria to burn bodies and hide evidence of the regime’s atrocities. Yediot Ahronot, Maariv and Israel Hayom all lead with similar headlines referring to “Assad’s Crematoria”. The revelation suggests Assad has killed thousands of prisoners.

All the Israeli papers report on the tension between Israeli and US officials ahead of President Trump’s visit next week. The papers report PM  Netanyahu’s unusual decision to reveal the minutes of his meeting with Donald Trump.  In Maariv Ben Caspit writes: “apparently Trump is not who we thought he was. It turns out that while the Israeli right wing was busy celebrating, the Palestinians and the Arab world were busy working. It seems to me that Benjamin Netanyahu knew the truth all along, or at least suspected it. Now these suspicions are being confirmed in detail.”

Haaretz highlights that President Trump disclosed highly classified information to Russia’s Foreign Minister about a planned ISIS operation. There is some speculation that Israel or Jordan could be the intelligence source.

Israel Hayom revisit what they call the “building freeze” in Jerusalem over the last five years due to President Obama. They claim only 639 apartments were built for Jews in East Jerusalem in that time. Israel Radio reports that a meeting about construction plans in the settlements that was scheduled for Wednesday was postponed at the request of a Government official. Officials are concerned over a clash with the US ahead of President Trump’s visit.  Sources close to the Prime Minister said that they were not the ones who gave the order.

Maariv note the launch yesterday of the newly formed public broadcasting corporation. The first guest on their news programme was Coalition Chairman MK David Bitan who had campaigned hard to close the corporation.  Yediot Ahronot covers the ongoing dispute over the corporation.  Despite its launch yesterday, the High Court of Justice issued an interim injunction delaying the separation of the news and current affairs division.  Now the sides must wait for a final ruling by the High Court of Justice.
