Israel’s Defence Minister Ehud Barak: ” Confronting Iran’s determination to attain a nuclear weapons capability is not without complications, risks and unpredictable consequences… But the same challenge if the regime of the ayatollahs is allowed to achieve that nuclear weapons capability would be far more complicated, risky, and costly in terms of lives and resources. Now is the moment for the entire international community to gear up to put a swift and decisive end to Iran’s nuclear programme.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “what is happening and could happen in Egypt is troubling, and what has happened in Sinai in the past year, and I can even say in the past number of years, is very troubling. Sinai has become a Wild West of sorts in which all kinds of groups—terror organizations from Hamas and Islamic Jihad and al-Qaida with Iranian aid are using that area to smuggle arms, to bring arms in, to generate attacks on Israel—we saw what happened at the border. But we are working in keeping with that reality and, incidentally, are acting in cooperation and continual dialogue with the Egyptian government, which is also troubled by that.”

Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure Uzi Landau : “At the end of the day it is not just a commercial deal between companies; it is an important deal between two countries … Something like this can’t happen without the knowledge of the Egytpian authorities. Nonetheless, we need to do everything to preserve the peace treaty with Egypt, of which the pipeline is an important part.”

My friends, a million and a half Israeli citizens are not Jewish. We are obligated to make sure that none of them are ever discriminated because of their nationality or religion. This is the essence of the existence of the State of Israel. Israel is a defense shield, a safe haven and a great spirit. Had the State of Israel existed during those days, I am convinced that things would have been different. We have paid a high price but we have not lost faith. We have gathered unusual capacities which emerged from the depths of the Holocaust and from the peaks of our legacy. We have a commitment towards the betterment of the world and respect for humanity. (From President Peres’s address to the Holocaust memorial ceremony at Yad Vashem. Communicated by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.)
