According to a WikiLeaks cable report, IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Harel told US Ambassador James Cunningham that Iran is manufacturing special rockets for Hamas that can be dismantled and assembled with ease, in order for them to be easily smuggled into Gaza. In the meeting which took place in February 2009, Harel mentioned that Katyusha, Grad and Fajr rockets where assembled by Iran with the intention to export the supplies to Hamas in Gaza. Harel also outlined other weaponry in Hamas’s arsenal. The leaked cable notes that Harel requested from the US that they apply pressure on Cairo to take further steps to stop the weapons smuggling from Egypt into Gaza.

In other news, US officials said yesterday that Iran is secretly assisting Syrian President Bashar Assad crackdown on antigovernment protests. The officials spoke to the Wall Street Journal and said there was credible information that Iran is assisting Syria. Meanwhile, President Assad has reformed a government and called for the release of all activists who were arrested during the recent antigovernment protests.
