Israeli leaders condemn Nice attack, offer condolences to France
Israeli leaders have condemned last night’s terror attack in the French city of Nice, after a truck was ploughed into a crowd watching a Bastille Day fireworks display, killing at least 84 people.
Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin sent a letter of condolence to his French counterpart, Francois Hollande, saying: “It is with pain and sorrow that I must once again write and express my deepest condolences, and those of all the Israeli people.”
He added: “Israel stands with France and the Israeli people stand with the French people, shoulder to shoulder in the face of this terrible evil… We must work united to reach the terrorists, their supporters and backers, wherever they may hide.”
Israel’s former-President Shimon President responded to the attack, saying: “We embrace the French people who are suffering from this tragic terror attack” and that “world leaders must come together and fight global terrorism.”
Opposition leader and Zionist Union head Isaac Herzog noted the poignancy of the attack, saying: “The vile terrorism… destroyed the celebration of freedom, equality and fraternity.”
He added: “This is our generation’s world war. My condolences to the French nation and the families of the killed and wounded.”
Herzog’s Zionist Union colleague, former-Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni expressed solidarity with the French people, writing in French on social media. She added that Israel and France stand together in the battle against terrorism.
Former-Likud minister Gideon Saar also took to social media to say that the attack was a mass murder of people and an attack on French values. He added: “My heart is with the French nation and the families of the large number of victims.”
Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that no Israelis had been killed or wounded in the attack. Emmanuel Nachshon, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry commented: “Solidarity with the France and the French people, in this tragic moment. Those who attack democracy and tolerance will never win.”
