IDF preparing for Al-Quds Day protests
The Israeli Defence Forces will be on high alert today along the Syrian and Lebanese border and in the West Bank due to concerns that Palestinians are planning large scale protest to mark Al-Quds Day (Jerusalem Day), the day when Israel recaptured Jerusalem from the Jordanians in 1967.
IDF sources have said troops will be positioned in places around the Golan Heights on the outskirts of the Druze village of Majdal Shams, which recently saw violent clashes with the police and attempts by Palestinian Syrians attempting to enter Israel. IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz visited the area yesterday and said that the army will be ready for any further protests. Palestinian organisers are using the Internet to mobilise more protesters, following-on the momentum of the three-day Naksa Day commemorations that began on Friday and continued until Sunday.
