Israel issues travel warnings fearing terror threats

[ssba]

The Israeli government’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau issued a warning Monday that Israeli and Jewish targets around the world were all possible targets for terrorist organisations. This warning coincides with the upcoming Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur. These days are likely to be a ‘favoured period’ for global jihadist groups, according to the warning. This time period also includes the anniversary of 9/11.

The warning specifically refers to Iran and Hezbollah’s continued ‘global terror campaign’ against Israeli and Jewish targets. Specifically the Bureau refers to Iran’s desire to avenge Israel’s alleged responsibility for the assassination of Hezbollah terror chief Imad Mughniyeh in a Damascus car-bombing in 2008, and the deaths of three Iranian nuclear scientists.

The warning orders Israelis not to travel to countries including Sudan, Somalia, and Tunisia. Tunisia in particular has been flagged up for “threats of attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets.” Israeli businessmen and ex-government officials are mentioned as possible targets. Iranian agents are believed to be responsible for a series of attacks on Israeli diplomats in India, Georgia and Thailand in February 2012. Hezbollah is believed to be responsible for the bombing which killed five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian bus driver in Burgas in July 2012.

As the situation in Egypt and the Sinai continues to deteriorate, Israelis have also been warned against travel to Sinai resorts.
