US examines Obama’s plan for security arrangements in West Bank

[ssba]

The Financial Times and Times reports that US President Donald Trump has signed the waiver to a congressional requirement to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in a reversal of a core pledge of his presidential campaign.

The Metro reports that Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev has threatened to withdraw funding for a major arts festival due to concern that the nudity in two of the shows “harm” Israel.

The Guardian reports that new film Wonder Woman has been banned in Lebanon because the film’s lead actor Gal Gadot is an Israeli. The Lebanese Government reached the decision following pressure from the organisation Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon, who described it as “the Israeli Soldier film”.

All the Israeli media cover the announcement by the White House to postpone moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Yediot Ahronot commented:  “We have taken a blow that is unpleasant, but of limited practical importance. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel even without the US embassy, just as Israel is a Jewish state even without written authorisation from Abu Mazen.” While Israel Hayom reflects on the disappointment in Israel upon hearing the announcement.

Haaretz and Maariv focus prominently on President Trump’s other big statement yesterday, the withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement and commitment to reduce greenhouse gases. On the same topic, Yediot Ahronot frames it “The President versus the world”.

Haaretz reveals that the US is examining the Obama administration’s plan for security arrangements in the West Bank for the day after a peace agreement. It is thought that US special negotiator Jason Greenblatt was briefed on the “Allen plan” devised by retired US Marine Corps General John Allen.  The plan was rejected at the time by serving Defence Minister Yaalon.

Maariv declares “New Negev Order” in light of the decision this week by Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to re-categorise around 40,000 acres of land that was expropriated after the 1948 War of Independence.

Haaretz also include testimony from Syrian defectors that President Assad personally ordered the development of nerve gas to use against his own people.

Kan radio news reports that Israel Fire and Rescue Services Commissioner Dedi Simchi has asked to expedite the operational response to the threat of arson in settlements located near a forest or grove in Judea and Samaria.
