Trump referred to Israeli-Palestinian “ultimate deal” he would like to broker

[ssba]

The Times reports on an Israeli University Study which shows that men are more likely to wilt under pressure than women. The Financial Times reports that an Israeli company, Cyber Int. has identified the theft of Tesco Bank customer information over the web.

All major Israeli media, including the Jerusalem Post, the Times of Israel, Haaretz, Yisrael Hayom, Ma’ariv and Yediot Ahronot, report on the political manoeuvring around the settlement legalisation bill. Ma’ariv’s Arik Bender and Dana Somberg report on Netanyahu’s attempts to stop the bill passing through the committee. Ben Caspit provides an analysis of the events yesterday: “If we were to take three packed seasons of House of Cards and squeeze them into a single day, we would get what we had yesterday. Complete chaos, or perhaps a complete breakdown, would be an accurate description of what happened.” Caspit also highlighted that the bill to restrict the level of permissible noise by mosque muezzins was approved by the Ministerial Committee during the same sitting, almost as a revenge move by Netanyahu towards Shaked’s support for the legalisation bill. Yedioth Ahronoth’s  Nahum Barnea views the whole question of delaying the High Court demolition order, possibly legalising settlements, as “blatant deceit” and a ploy by Prime Minister Netanyahu to buy time until Trump takes office. The paper’s analysis by Tova Tzimuki highlights the conflict that this incident reveals between the Attorney General and ministers, who flouted his advice, and also between Mandlebilt and Justice Minister Shaked, who is refusing to defer to the opinion of the Attorney General.

Another major news story in Israel, covered by all media, are the Rabin memorial events and the clash between right and left wing parties over claims of incitement both then and now.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Trump has referred to any agreement between Israel and the Palestinians as the “ultimate deal” which he would like to broker. The paper also described the Iranian reaction to Trump’s campaign rhetoric on Iran. The paper quotes a senior Iranian military source, who was quoted in the London-based Arabic daily Asharq al-Awsat, admitting that Iran is manufacturing weapons in Aleppo and supplying them to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Yisrael Hayom reported that International credit rating agency Fitch upgraded Israel’s long-term credit rating from “A” to “A+” – a move which Finance Minster Kahlon said attests to the agencies’ confidence in Israel’s economy and government’s fiscal policies.
