Sara Netanyahu takes lie detector test

[ssba]

The Times and the Telegraph both report that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, took a lie detector test to dispel allegations that she claimed state payments for personal expenses. Sara Netanyahu’s lawyer, Yossi Cohen, confirmed that the test had taken place but gave no details of its content or results.

The i and the Daily Mail reports on the arrest of six people, including Netanyahu’s former Chief of Staff and a former navy commander, as part of the investigation into alleged corruption over purchases of submarines by Israel from a German company.

The Israeli media is focusing on a range of investigations into and around Prime Minister Netanyahu.  Both Yediot Ahronot and Maariv lead on the arrest of David Sharan, a former head of the Prime Minister’s office on suspicion of receiving bribes in connection to the submarine case.

Maariv and Israel Hayom give prominent coverage to North Korea’s testing of a hydrogen bomb. Former Maj. Gen. Yaakov Amidror, who served as National Security Adviser, writes in Israel Hayom on the dilemma of whether the US needs to respond now militarily before it’s too late. He highlights just how difficult the decision is without knowing the full extent of North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons.

Details have been reported of the extent and timing of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s conversations with the editor and publisher of Israel HayomYediot Ahronot says “yesterday he was forced also to provide the dates of the conversations, which showed that they took place just before the newspaper was printed and its main headlines chosen. Furthermore, the frequency of the conversations rose significantly during election campaigns.” Maariv says: “The times of the conversations and their dates prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Netanyahu simply dictated the headlines to his buddies at the freebie who cited ‘high-ranking Likud sources’ or other pseudonyms. This is another important part of the puzzle proving what has been alleged in this newspaper ever since the Bibi-Times was established; this was illegal election campaign funding.”

Relating to this report Coalition Chairman MK David Bitan was interviewed on Kan radio news  and said he would demand the details of the conversations of former prime ministers, Olmert, Sharon and Barak, with the editors and publishers of Yediot Ahronot, Haaretz and Maariv when they were Prime Ministers. Bitan said that conversations between Prime Ministers and newspaper editors were part of the job and that the attempt to paint as problematic behavior that spanned the political and media spectrum was distorted and bordered on scandalous.

In a separate investigation, Haaretz reports that Sara Netanyahu, the Prime Minister’s wife, is expected to be indicted for fraud after receiving £85,000 worth of gifts.

Haaretz also reports that the Israeli Cabinet approved the resumption of work on a new settlement in the West Bank to house former residents of the illegal outpost of Amona.

Israel Hayom reports on the “disgraceful behaviour” of Eran Zehavi, who captained the Israel national football team in their defeat at home to Macedonia. After being booed by the crowd he petulantly threw off the captain’s armband.  He was suspended from representing the national team for a year for unsporting behaviour. Brighton’s Tomer Hemed is expected to captain the side that faces Italy on Tuesday night.
