Ryanair announces new routes from Israel to European cities
The Times, Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and i all report on yesterday’s eviction of the Amona outpost in the West Bank, following the High Court ruling that it had been illegally constructed on private Palestinian land. The Times says that more than a dozen Israeli police officers were injured in clashes with protesters, who had arrived at Amona to resist the evacuation. The Telegraph places yesterday’s events in the context of Israeli government approval, less than a day before the evacuation, for a further 3,000 West Bank homes. The Guardian says that West Bank construction will likely be discussed by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump when they meet at the White House later this month.
The Times reports that Prime Minister Theresa May will host Prime Minister Netanyahu in London next week. The article also notes that Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood has condemned the announcement to build 3,000 new West Bank homes.
The Independent and online edition of the Telegraph report that Iran’s Defence Minister confirmed yesterday that Tehran carried out a ballistic missile test earlier this week “in line with our plans,” but claimed that it “did not violate the nuclear deal or [United Nations’ Security Council] resolution 2231”. The Telegraph, Independent and online editions of the Guardian and Financial Times all cover the response of US National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, who said: “We are officially putting Iran on notice.”
The Daily Express says that Nigel Farage accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of being a “hypocrite” for attacking Trump’s travel ban targeting seven Muslim-majority countries, while at the same time hosting diplomats from countries which ban Israelis.
The Times and Daily Mail both report that Ryanair has announced new routes from Israel to a number of European cities.
In the Israeli media, the front pages of Yediot Ahronot, Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom are fully focused on the evacuation of Amona. The headline in Yediot Ahronot reads “Tears of eviction”. Israel Radio reports this morning that just the synagogue and one home in the outpost remain occupied and have not yet been evicted.
Writing in Yediot Ahronot, Sima Kadmon says: “No one enjoys seeing people being evicted from their homes, be it in Tel Aviv’s Amal neighbourhood, Umm al-Hiran or Amona. We’re talking about people, children, entire families that are uprooted from their homes; it is an unpleasant spectacle.” In Maariv, Yossi Melman praises the police for treating the demonstrators at Amona “gently and with understanding”. He also notes that “centrists and the dwindling left-wing note that only right-wing governments are capable of removing settlements” and that “even should the unexpected happen and the centre form a government, it will not be capable of removing settlements”.
Israel Hayom and Israel Radio both prominently report that Prime Minister Netanyahu yesterday pledged to build a new settlement in the West Bank to house the evicted residents of Amona. It would be the first new West Bank settlement to be constructed since 1991. Sima Kadmon in Yediot Ahronot notes that Netanyahu made the announcement roughly half an hour after Jewish Home leader, Education Minister Naftali Bennett said that a new settlement was required for the Amona residents.
