The Independent reports on the IDF Exercise “Or Hadagan” (Light of the Grain) which will simulate a ten-day war with Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border and will involve all branches of the IDF. The report suggests that the exercise is intended as a show of strength to deter Hezbollah from attacking Israel.

The BBC and the Times report on the eviction of a Palestinian family from their East Jerusalem home after a lengthy legal battle. The Shamasneh family were forced to leave the property they had lived in for 53 years after an Israeli court ruled in favor of the heir of the property’s original Jewish owner. Under Israeli law, Jewish citizens can reclaim property lost to Jordan when it occupied East Jerusalem in the 1948 war.

The BBC reports that government forces in Syria have lifted the ISIS siege of Deir Ezzor. An estimated 93,000 civilians have been trapped in the enclave since 2015 and have survived on military relief flights and UN air drops. Deir Ezzor’s surrounding province is the last major ISIS stronghold in Syria, and the “capital” of ISIS’s caliphate, Raqqa, is currently being besieged by US-backed Kurdish forces.

The Guardian reports that Egypt is to repair the historic synagogue in Alexandria. The Eliyahu Hanavi synagogue has fallen into a state of disrepair and the Egyptian government has pledged to repair the building as part of a £55m project to restore eight monuments. While the Jewish community in Alexandria once numbered nearly 25,000, today the number of Jews in the city is believed to be fewer than eight people. Most of Alexandria’s Jewish community left Egypt after the State of Israel was established in 1948.

Both the Guardian and the BBC cover the humanitarian crisis in Yemen where more than 1,100 children have been killed, mostly as a result of airstrikes carried out by the Saudi-led coalition. The UN report indicates that hostilities have increased sharply, with more airstrikes taking place in the first half of 2017 than in all of 2016. 5,144 civilians have been killed and 8,749 injured in what the UN describes as an “entirely man made catastrophe”.

In the Israeli media, Yediot Ahronot, Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom all report that billionaire Arnon Milchan is suspected of having bribed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israel Police’s National Fraud Investigations Unit questioned Milchan in London last week under caution and believe that the gifts he gave Netanyahu were essentially bribes meant to promote his business deals. Milchan had previously provided a statement on what is known as Case 1,000, but this is the first time he has been questioned under caution. A source close to Netanyahu said in response that any attempt to read anything improper into a longstanding and strong friendship between the two was baseless and destined to fail.  The story that Milchan is now considered a suspect in Case 1,000 was reported last night for the first time on Channel Ten.

Haaretz reports that U.S President Donald Trump is to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the UN General Assembly in order to promote his peace initiative.

Maariv features reports from Lebanese media about the IDF’s current exercise preparing for a conflict with Hezbollah.  It quotes the Al-Manar website which headlines “huge manoeuvres  by the Israeli army that simulate a Hezbollah invasion of the border,”  and also notes that Al-Akhbar featured a two-page spread on the story, including commentary saying “Israel is worried about the Russian position, which is full of praise for Hezbollah’s military capabilities.

Haaretz, Yediot Ahronot and Times of Israel report that for the first time since 2009, Israel has evicted a Palestinian Family from their home in East Jerusalem to make way for its Pre-1948 Jewish Owners. In 2013, the Shamasneh family lost their appeal in the Supreme Court, after lower courts ruled that the land should be restored to its Jewish owner.

Maariv reports that a conference will take place tomorrow between three Councils of Torah Sages of different Ultra-Orthodox parties to discuss what they see as desecrations of the Sabbath allowed by the Government.

Maariv also reports that part of the ISIS stronghold in Deir Ezzor in Syria has been captured by regime forces and quotes Russian President Vladimir Putin who called it a “strategic victory”.

Haaretz, the Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post report that President Reuven Rivlin has travelled to Germany at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Stienmeier where he will inaugurate the Munich Games memorial to the Israeli athletes murdered 45 years ago.

Kan Radio News reports that the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer last night met with Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
