Israeli minister criticises Trump over settlements
BBC News Online reports on the meeting between the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority (PA) Rami Hadallah and senior Hamas leaders in Gaza yesterday. The talks are aimed at bringing about reconciliation between the two entities and re-integrating Gaza into the PA. Hamdallah said his priority was to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s residents.
The Times reports claims by Western diplomats that the Egyptian military tried to buy North Korean arms via a web of intermediaries and private companies in defiance of an international arms embargo. Yediot Ahronot reports that for the first time a Government minister, Zeev Elkin (Likud), has criticised the Trump administration for continuing Obama’s approach to restricting settlement construction. Elkin said: “This administration feels comfortable about changing the Obama administration’s commitment to the climate accord and many other things, but for some reason when it comes to us, they hold the same approach that construction beyond the Green Line is a negative Israeli action.”
Israel Hayom and Yediot Ahronot follow the IDF investigation into the terror attack in Halamish in July where three family members were stabbed to death in their home. The investigation noted operational failures including when the terrorist scaled the perimeter fence he set off the sensors, but the IDF were not made aware of the breach.
Maariv reports Likud MK Yehuda Glick’s petition to the High Court to allow Jewish MKs to visit the Temple Mount during the upcoming Succot festival. The ban has been imposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Kan Radio news notes Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a telephone consultation next week to discuss Iran. France recently made it clear that it was opposed to cancelling the nuclear agreement with Iran. However French officials said that they were very concerned by Tehran’s missile program.
Haaretz reveals that Minister Miri Regev travelled to Cuba on a private family holiday despite Israel having no diplomatic relations with the island. This is the first time since 1973 that a minister has visited a country with no formal diplomatic relations with Israel. She cleared her trip in advance with the relevant authorities.
