Israel warns Iran not to block shipping lane

LBC, The Times, Telegraph, Sky News and the Mirror report on the growing antisemitism crisis facing the Labour party. The Times reports that six months after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn hosted an event on 2010 Holocaust Memorial Day at the House of Commons that likened Israeli government policy to that of the Nazis. Corbyn then compared Israel’s actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis at Stalingrad and Leningrad. In a rally outside the Israeli embassy in London Corbyn said: “I saw . . . the psychological damage to a whole generation, who’ve been imprisoned for as long as the siege of Leningrad and Stalingrad took place.” In addition, The Times also reports that leaflets suggesting people participating in Holocaust Memorial Day are hypocrites and Israel is falsifying the genocide to justify colonisation, were distributed at an event hosted by Corbyn on Holocaust Memorial Day in 2010. The Telegraph reports Corbyn told police to remove Jewish attendees from the event in Parliament when they objected to comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany. Holocaust survivor Rubin Katz said the event held on Holocaust Memorial Day took place in an “anti-Semitic and anti-Israel atmosphere” in which its host, Corbyn, was “ordering people out” if they tried to speak up for Israel. Sky News reports that in response to the accusations, Corbyn admitted he has “on occasion appeared on platforms with people whose views I completely reject.” The Mirror reports that on Holocaust Memorial Day in 2011, Corbyn and Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell also called for Holocaust Memorial Day to be renamed to remove the word Holocaust and to rename it “Genocide Memorial Day.”BICOM CEO James Sorene was interviewed by Nick Ferrari on LBC this morning to talk about antisemitism, the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn.

Reuters and the Daily Mail report that Israel has reimposed its blockade of fuel supplies to Gaza in response to the resurgence of flying firebombs and kites from across the border. Reuters reports that Israel stopped shipments of fuel and gas to the Gaza Strip on Thursday. A statement from the office of Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Wednesday said he had ordered a halt to fuel supplies into the strip via the Kerem Shalom crossing until further notice. The Daily Mail notes that Lieberman said the crackdown was in response to “the pursuit of terrorism” using fire kites and balloons amid persistent protests along the border.

The Daily Mail and Reuters record that Israel would deploy its military to stop Iran from blocking the Bab al-Mandeb Strait that links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The Daily Mail reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran it would face military action if it blocked the key shipping lane. The warning came after Yemen’s Iranian-aligned Huthi rebels attacked two Saudi oil tankers. Netanyahu said: “At the start of the week we witnessed a sharp clash with Iranian proxies who tried to obstruct international navigation in the Strait at the entrance to the Red Sea.” Reuters reports that during a parade for new naval officers in Haifa, Netanyahu said: “If Iran will try to block the straits of Bab al-Mandeb, I am certain that it will find itself confronting an international coalition that will be determined to prevent this, and this coalition will also include all of Israel’s military branches.”

All the Israeli newspapers report on the government’s dialogue with the Druze community to end the crisis that erupted over the Nation-State Law. Israel Hayom claims the Druze leadership will accept the Prime Minister’s compromise offer. Maariv interviewed several Druze leaders to discuss the proposed solution and found the community divided. Druze Spiritual Leader Sheikh Muafak Tarif and Druze MKs in the governing coalition praised the “historic proposal” that was put forward by the Prime Minister, whereas MK Saleh Saad from the Zionist Union party described it as “capitulation”. Saad was joined by Rami Halabi from Daliat al-Carmel, who wrote last night that the proposal, if accepted, “would be spitting in the face of every Druze person. This is a proposal that is an insult to our intelligence”. Maghar Mayor Ziyad Dagesh said: “We are still second-class citizens even according to the arrangement. That is not what we expected. It is outrageous.”

Yediot Ahronot spoke to young Druze high school graduates who are about to be conscripted into the army and are divided. They heard a range of responses, including Anil Aktish: “The Nation-State Law didn’t offend me personally; it offended the community. I’m determined to be accepted to an elite unit and to contribute the maximum to the country.” Amir and Ala Morad, who also said they believed in performing meaningful service, concurred and said: “Politicians come and go, but the country stays.” Wasim Abu Rokun from Ousfiya countered: “Ever since I was a little kid my dream has been to be a combat soldier. But the Nation-State Law has had an effect. Before it I was eagerly waiting to enlist. Now, my motivation is a bit down. I’m asking myself, who am I enlisting for?”

All the newspapers report Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech yesterday to IDF naval cadets in which he warned Iran against attacking Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and blocking the straits of Bab el-Mandeb. Netanyahu said: “If Iran tries to block Bab el-Mandeb, I am confident that it will find itself facing an international coalition that is determined to prevent it from doing that. That coalition will also include the State of Israel, and all its branches.” Yediot Ahronot adds that “Israeli officials discussed their concerns about a possible Iranian attack on Israeli vessels in talks with the Americans, who have a significant military presence in the area. Israeli commercial vessels were warned by state officials to remain on heightened alert and to use alternating routes.”

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman is also quoted at the event saying: “The IDF is prepared and ready to provide a response on two fronts simultaneously, as well as at sea.” Haaretz carries a Reuters report that according to the US, “Iran is preparing to carry out a major exercise in the Gulf in the coming days, apparently moving up the timing of annual drills… Iran has been furious over US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of an international nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions on Tehran. Senior Iranian officials have warned the country would not easily yield to a renewed US campaign to strangle Iran’s vital oil exports.  The US military’s Central Command confirmed that it has seen an increase in Iranian activity, including in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for oil shipments that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have threatened to block.”

Yediot Ahronot reports that Defence Minister Lieberman last night announced an open-ended ban on petrol and natural gas imports to the Gaza Strip as of this morning. The decision was made in response to the ongoing flying fire kites and balloons that has plagued the Gaza periphery communities. The paper notes that despite all the reports about an arrangement between Israel and Hamas being negotiated under the supervision of UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov, the flying firebombs against Israel have persisted. Yesterday seven fires were set in the western Negev — all in open fields and in nature reserves. On Tuesday, there were 16 fires but firefighters have them under control.

Maariv reveals that hackers attacked Israeli news sites last night and changed content on their websites. Offensive content was removed from the Kan news website and from the Channel Ten news site. A clip in Arabic and Palestinian Authority flags were placed on Kan. The Channel Ten news site displayed content in English that Yemeni hackers had taken control of IDF Unit 8200.

Kan radio news reports on the gay pride parade to be held in Jerusalem this afternoon. The participants will march from Liberty Bell Park to Independence Park, and streets adjacent to the parade will be closed from 15:00 PM local time.

Israel Hayom and Maariv prominently report that Andreas Herzog, the former Austrian international footballer has been appointed as the new manager of the Israeli national football team.
