Israel to advance legislation legalising adoption by same-sex couples

The Daily Mail reports that on Sunday Israel’s Justice ministry said the government would advance legislation giving gay couples equal rights in adopting children.

The Daily Mail, the Telegraph and Reuters report on clashes between ultra-Orthodox protestors and Israeli police during which eight people were arrested. Hundreds of members of the Eda Haredit sect protested in Jerusalem yesterday. Violence broke out when demonstrators blocked roads and resisted efforts by the police to disperse them.

BBC News Online, Guardian and the Times report that Hamas has said it is ready to end its feud with Fatah. The statement was made at a meeting between representatives from Hamas and senior Egyptian officials in Cairo on Sunday.

The Times reports that Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has issued a warning to the Iraqi Kurds who are expected to vote for independence in next week’s referendum that they are playing with fire and that Iraq would deploy troops on the streets if they turn to violence.

All of the Israeli media discuss Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump and his address tomorrow to the UN General Assembly. Maariv and Haaretz lead with headlines suggesting Netanyahu will try and convince Trump to cancel the nuclear agreement with Iran. However, Shlomo Shamir in Maariv estimates that that the chances of any meaningful changes in the nuclear agreement are “exceedingly slim and approaching zero”.

Haaretz leads with an announcement by Hamas that it will dismantle its shadow government in Gaza in advance of an agreement with Fatah.

Yedioth Ahronoth, Maariv and Israel Hayom report on violent clashes that took place yesterday between ultra-Orthodox and the police. Israel Hayom’s headline argues that the police went too far with its violent response to the demonstrators. Army Radio reports this morning that the Police Internal Investigations Department has begun investigating claims of police violence against the demonstrators.

Haaretz reports that the High Court has approved measures to restict asylum seekers access to employment.

The Jerusalem Post reports comments by Defence Minister Lieberman that West Bank settlements are necessary for Israel’s defence.

The Times of Israel reports that Prime Minister Netanyahu met yesterday with eight senior leaders of the American Jewish community to talk about a broad range of issues including Israel-Diaspora relations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran. Netanyahu was asked to ‘clarify’ his position on the egalitarian prayer platform at the Western Wall.
