[ssba]

The Financial Times, Guardian and BBC report that the US has carried out missile strikes against a Syrian airbase in response to the chemical attack in Idlib on Tuesday. The Guardian notes that Russia has labelled the strike “a significant blow to US-Russia relations”.

The Times , Daily Telegraph and i cover the story that Hamas has executed three men for collaborating with Israel. The i reports that the three Palestinians were hanged at a police compound as Hamas leaders watched. The Times notes that the men were found guilty of cooperation with Israeli intelligence agents dating back to the 1980s.

The Guardian reports that two former heads of the Shin Bet have warned that Israel is in a state of “incremental tyranny” at an event in Jerusalem organised by military whistle-blowing group Breaking the Silence. Carmi Gillon recognised the occupation as a driver of this change: “This country was established on the values of liberal democracy… values we don’t fulfil anymore… everything is under the shade of the occupation.” Ami Ayalon cited that the concept of an “ongoing war” with the Palestinians was an “Orwellian dynamic keeping Israelis in a state of fear for political ends”.

The Times reports that a Labour candidate in the Gorton by-election Afzal Khan has apologised for accusing Israel of genocide at a rally against the Iraq War 15 years ago.

The Guardian features an article on Passover that explores the history and meaning of the holiday, and how it relates to Israel today.

Going to print before this morning’s air stikes Yediot Ahronot doubles down on its interview with Defence Minister Lieberman yesterday, finds support from the US quoting Trump – “Something has to be done with Assad”, with US sources saying “military option is on the table”.  Similarly Haaretz suggests the US is formulating plans for a military strike on Syria.  While Israel Hayom goes further, according to sources in the Trump Administration “Assad has no place as leader of Syrian people”.   According to Israel Radio, Israel was also notified in advance of the US strike on Syria. Elsewhere in Yediot Ahronot, they cover the phone conversation between Netanyahu and Putin.  The original intention was for Netanyahu to express condolences following the terror attack in St. Petersburg, but became a reprimand by the Russian president for the accusations made by Jerusalem that the Assad regime was behind the chemical attack in Idlib.  It is thought this was directed against Defence Minister Lieberman and his interview to Yediot Ahronot, in which he stated unequivocally that Assad was behind the strike and also backed this by Israeli intelligence.

All the papers also cover the funeral of the soldier killed yesterday in the terror ramming attack outside Ofra, Yediot Ahronot‘s headline “You were an angel, and you were taken like an angel”.  Reporting on the incident the paper noted “eyewitnesses said that they had observed the terrorist examining security arrangements and driving past the junction several times. When he arrived at the bus stop from the south, he took advantage of the gap between the concrete barriers, accelerated his vehicle and ran over two soldiers”.

Ben Caspit in Maariv exclusively reveals that President Trump consulted with PA Chairman Abu Mazen and asked him if Netanyahu is a partner for peace with the Palestinians. The conversation took place on March 10.  This has added to concerns in Jerusalem over Trump’s intentions regarding the ‘ultimate deal’.

Maariv also cover the executions by Hamas of three Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel by providing information.  It is thought to be a response to the killing of Mazen Fuqaha though those killed were not specifically connected.  Palestinian human rights organisations and the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah have condemned the executions.  Quoting Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj. Gen. Yoav (Poli) Mordechai: “‎The executions again show Hamas‎s cruelty and its lack of humanity. They were carried out with no fair trial and without presenting testimony or evidence. Hamas behaves with cruelty and executes anyone it wants to for personal reasons and always has the same accusation and excuse read ‘‎spying for Israel’. ‎Hamas executes Palestinians with no judge or jury. Hamas and ISIS‎their names are different, but their mode of operation is the same.”

Maariv also report on more controversy from MK Hanin Zuabi of the Joint List she was interviewed on Israel Radio and compared Assad’s army to the IDF.  As she continued to argue and scream at the anchor she was taken off air.
