Gulf minister calls on Qatar to end support for terror groups

The British media all focus on the General Election and the shock result of a hung parliament.

The Independent reports on secret documents from the 1967 Six-Dar War that reveal Israel planned to detonate a nuclear weapon in the Sinai Peninsula as a show of strength if it was losing the war.

The Financial Times reports that Qatar sees US President Donald Trump as essential to resolving its stand-off with Saudi Arabia. The Guardian  reports that a leading diplomat from the UAE said the Gulf States have lost all trust in Qatar. The Telegraph  quotes a senior Gulf minister calling on Qatar to end its support for terror groups.

The Guardian features an overview of the wave of terror attacks carried out in the Middle East and beyond by ISIS during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

International news dominates the Israeli media. Both Yediot Ahronot and Haaretz focus on the testimony of former FBI director, James Comey, to the Senate Intelligence Committee.  The papers highlight his claim that the Trump administration is lying about attempts to disrupt the FBI investigation into connections between Russia and the Trump Campaign.

Maariv and Israel Hayom  cover the testimony but highlight the position of President Trump who feels his administration in “under siege”.   Yediot Ahronot reflects on lessons for Israel from the Comey affair including envying the “civilised nature of a Senate hearing compared to what happens in our Knesset committees”.

The British election features prominently, Haaretz reported the exit polls as “May lost control of parliament”.   Israel Hayom also note the high tension in the election, particularly in the shadow of recent terror attacks.

In domestic news, Maariv leads with an interview on Bloomberg with Mohammad Mustafa, a senior economic adviser to Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Mustafa said that Abbas would temporarily shelve his demand for a construction freeze in the settlements in order to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, and would also ease the diplomatic and legal campaign against Israel.

Haaretz reports that 51-year-old Ibrahim Hassin Abu Anji died in an explosion in the Gaza Strip.  He was a senior Hamas military commander and one of their expert bomb makers. Three other people were injured in the blast in the Rafah refugee camp in southern Gaza.

Israel Hayom and Haaretz report on the US Justice Department arrested two men connected to Hezbollah who had been plotting attacks against Americans and Israelis in the US and Panama.

Yediot Ahronot cover the ethical code for institutions of higher education that recommends forbidding lecturers to express political opinions during classes.

Kan radio news reveals Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain have added dozens of individuals and corporations operating in Qatar to their lists as being associated with terrorism.
