The Independent covers the comments of former Israeli Supreme Court judge who has spoken out against Israel striking Iran unilaterally. The Daily Mail runs yesterday’s story from Yediot Ahronot that the US passed on messages to Iran that it would not support Israel if it attacked unilaterally. The Independent includes a Reuters report claiming Iran has built 30% of a missile defence system that Moscow refused to sell it. According to a senior Iranian military official it will be completed by next year. The Financial Times reviews the Israeli dance group performing at the Edinburgh festival. The Guardian and BBC online note the death of a Palestinian in Gaza who set himself on fire, protesting the poor living conditions of his family. The Independent follows up on the anti-Semitic terror attack in Toulouse in March revealing that the killer’s sister “had been under surveillance as a possible Islamic activist since 2008”, suggesting he may not have acted alone.
In the Israeli media, Israel Hayom points out that according to the White House, yesterdays report in Yediot Ahronot that the US passed on messages to Iran that it would not support Israel if it attacked unilaterally was “deceptive and false”. Yediot Ahronot also runs a more conciliatory line suggesting both US and Israel are working towards a deal to reduce the tension. Maariv suggests that a deal of “American weapons in exchange for [Israeli] patience” may be in the working. Haaretz covers the intelligence community’s annual review that will be presented to the cabinet today. Yediot Ahronot also warns that the price of a continued crisis will be paid if President Obama is re-elected. The concern is that the US may end its policy of automatically vetoing anti Israel resolutions in the UN. The Jerusalem Post reports West Bank Palestinians planning social justice demonstrations over the increase in costs of basic goods and fuel.
