Netanyahu to Ashton: Iran Playing for Time in nuclear Talks
The UK media today continues to cover the Israeli national unity government agreement. Most papers agree this is a significant coup for Prime Minister Netanyahu. The Guardian has a feature on Gilad Shalit and his five years in captivity at the hands of Hamas in Gaza. BBC online covers explosions within the Syrian capital Damascus. The Times notes that a roadside bomb exploded near UN observers in the southern Syrian city of Deraa. The Norwegian head of the delegation, who was in the convoy, was unharmed.
Today’s Israeli media continues to concentrate on political matters. Yesterday’s stormy signing ceremony for Kadima chairman Mofaz joining the government is widely reported. Yediot Ahronot notes that despite the numerical disadvantage of the opposition they still landed a variety of blows to the government and its new partner. This included temporarily delaying proceedings as the Prime Minister was asked about any secret clauses in the coalition agreement. Ma’ariv and other outlets reports that one of Kadima’s founding members, Chaim Ramon, is quitting the party following the agreement. The Jerusalem Post notes that PM Netanyahu and other senior ministers met with European foreign policy chief Ashton yesterday to discuss the upcoming round of talks between world powers and Iran. The Times of Israel includes an interview with Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor in which he argues Israel should stop building in the outlying settlements beyond the security barrier. Ma’ariv reports on Palestinian plans to attempt to upgrade their status at the UN at a large gathering of around 100 world leaders at an environmental conference in South America in June. Ma’ariv also reports on the phenomena of Palestinians copying the tactics of some settlers and establishing illegal outposts comprised of caravans and temporary structures around the West Bank. Israel radio reports Palestinians fired a Kassam rocket last night at the western Negev from Gaza. No one was injured and no damage was caused.
