Mofaz defeats Livni in Kadima primary

[ssba]

In the UK media today, the Independent notes the Kadima elections, whilst the Telegraph online covers Shaul Mofaz’s victory in the party primaries. The Guardian reports on the progress of the new fence being constructed on the Israel–Egypt border, noting both the lethal terror attack in August that killed eight Israelis and the phenomenon of African refugees attempting to cross the border into Israel. The Independent follows Marwan Barghouti’s comments calling for another popular uprising and severing all ties with Israel. Barghouti is serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for his role in murdering Israelis, and is seen by some Palestinians as potential future president. In other news, Syria continues to feature prominently. BBC online reports on UN human rights chief accusing the Syrian regime of ‘deliberately and systematically targeting children’. Events in Toulouse and the repercussions remain in the news, the Telegraph and Independent note Al Jazeera’s decision not to air the footage of the murders they received, filmed by the killer. Whist the Times reports President Sarkozy threatened to jam the signal of any TV station that broadcast the footage. Financial Times reports on the toughening stance of President Sarkozy as he promises to deport ‘extremists’. The Independent covers the controversy surrounding a shampoo advert in Turkey that uses Hitler to sell the product.

All Israeli media outlets cover the convincing election victory for Shaul Mofaz in the Kadima leadership race. The future of the party, whether it will remain in the opposition and the fate of former leader Tzipi Livni are all discussed at length. Yediot Ahronot speculates that the result will please the Labour party and Yair Lapid. Further speculation in Ma’ariv, that Prime Minister Netanyahu would have preferred a Livni victory as Mofaz has the potential to cut into the party’s centre-right support. Yediot Ahronot, Haaretz and Jerusalem Post note the Pentagon will ask the US Congress to approve additional funds for more Iron Dome batteries for Israel. The Jerusalem Post reports that British Conservative MP John Howell received death threats for defending Israel. Israel Hayom covers Prime Minister’s visit to inspect the progress of the security fence along the Egyptian border. Meanwhile Ynet reports on another attempted infiltration by Palestinian terrorists into Israel from along that border.
