Egypt announces agreement to stop Gaza escalation

[ssba]

The British media today widely discusses Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to Washington. The ongoing violence across the Israel-Gaza border also receives broad coverage. Online news sources provide additional detail of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Egypt. The Daily Mirror, Financial Times, and the Independent include coverage of the 190 rockets fired into southern Israel and focus their headline on five people killed inside Gaza. The Guardian reports from the town of Beit Lahiya in Gaza and draws attention to the children there. The Times comments on the interview of former Mossad chief Meir Dagan to CBS’s 60 minutes, quoting him saying a ‘strike on Iran is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard’. The Independent includes a report on the compromise agreement involving the West Bank settlers of Migron, adding Peace Now’s assertion that the government is colluding with the settlers.

The Israeli media focuses on the ceasefire agreement brokered by Egypt last night. Both Yediot Ahronot and Israel Hayom analyse the Egyptian role and remain sceptical over the ability of Hamas to successfully reign in other armed groups that led the rocket fire in recent days. Both note the reluctance of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) to uphold the ceasefire. Israel Hayom also warns that without a ceasefire deal in the next few days the situation could deteriorate and bring about an IDF ground incursion into Gaza. All papers continue to tout the success of the Iron Dome missile defence system, while Yediot Ahronot announces that a forth battery could become operational earlier than had been anticipated. They also note yesterday’s explosion in the Israeli town of Gan Yavne as a new record for a Grad rocket fired from Gaza. Haaretz reports that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is under pressure not to escalate tensions with Israel and avoid threats to dismantle the Palestinian Authority. The Jerusalem Post covers the Quartet meeting and notes their ‘bland statement’ on the Israelis and Palestinians to “remain engaged” and “refrain from provocative actions.”
