EU, US impose new Iran sanctions

In the UK media today, most papers cover the decision by the EU to approve additional sanctions against Iran. In other stories, the Guardian, Economist, Independent, Times, New Statesman and Reuters have reporting and analysis on the parliamentary elections in Egypt, which began this week. The Guardian has an additional piece on an attempt by an Arab-Israeli NGO to insist that residents of Gaza wishing to claim damages against Israel because of injuries suffered during Israeli military action be permitted to enter Israel to pursue their claims. The paper also has a piece on the growing cult status of Iranian Qods Force leader Qassem Suleimani in Iran, and an op-ed on the expulsion of Iranian diplomats from the UK. The Times has a piece on the ‘secret war’ against the Iranian nuclear programme. The Jewish Chronicle and the New Statesman note remarks by a Labour MP on the Jewish identity of Matthew Gould, Britain’s ambassador to Israel. The New Statesman interviews the UK Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, and has a piece by John Pilger predicting war with Iran and referring to Israel as a ‘nuclear weapons outlaw.’ Reuters and Sky News Online report on the violence in Syria and a UN statement confirming that a civil war is now under way in the country. The Daily Express has a piece arguing that Iranian aggression threatens both the UK and the Middle East. The Financial Times, meanwhile, runs a piece by former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband on the risks of ‘sleepwalking into war’ with Iran. The Daily Telegraph has a piece by former Foreign Secretary David Owen arguing against a military strike on Iran. The Times, meanwhile, has an article discussing Iranian attitudes toward Israel.

The print edition of Israel Hayom leads with Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish’s speech yesterday, in which she criticized what she called a ‘campaign of incitement’ against the Court. Haaretz print edition also notes the speech. The Jerusalem Post print edition focuses on Islamist gains in the Egyptian elections. Haaretz print edition has a lead story on a television interview given last night by former Mossad Head Meir Dagan, in which he expressed his opposition to a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In the Israeli media, Haaretz notes former Mossad head Meir Dagan’s objection to a military attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. The paper also quotes Palestinian Authority Salam Fayyad as saying that he will not lead a Palestinian unity government, and notes a US Senate decision on additional sanctions against Iran. The Jerusalem Post reports on Islamist gains in the Egyptian elections. Ynetnews notes Labour MP Paul Flynn’s remarks on the Jewish identity of Matthew Gould, Britain’s ambassador to Israel, and reports on Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch’s speech yesterday. Maariv notes anger among rightist MKs following Beinish’s remarks. Israel Hayom notes a statement by President Barack Obama on his Administration’s contribution to Israel’s security and notes a Times report on Israel’s ‘secret war’ against Iranian nuclear facilities.
