The Times, Telegraph and Independent i all report that Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer has distributed an official seasonal hamper comprised of West Bank products including olive oil, wine, halva and body lotion. Dermer said that he had done so in response to the European Union’s recent implementation of separate labelling for West Bank products, which he said “cast a beacon of freedom, tolerance and decency as a pariah state.”
Both the Guardian and Independent include features on Bethlehem’s modest Christmas celebrations this year, in light of dwindling numbers of tourists visiting for the festive season. Local residents are quoted saying that the current violence in the region, combined with the recent bombings in Paris and of a Russian plane in Sinai, have deterred foreigners from visiting this year. Meanwhile, the Financial Times says that elaborate twelfth century mosaics in Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, which have been restored over recent years, will be unveiled at Midnight Mass tonight.

In the Israeli media, Yediot Ahronot, Maariv, Haaretz and Israel Hayom all lead with yesterday’s terror attack in Jerusalem, which saw two Israelis killed. Yediot Ahronot and Maariv also note on their front pages, that it is 100 days since the current wave of attacks began. Israel Radio news says this morning that the third victim of yesterday’s attack remains in hospital, but is not in a life-threatening condition.
Another major item this morning, covered prominently in Yediot Ahronot, Haaretz, Israel Hayom and Maariv is footage which was broadcast yesterday evening on Channel Ten, from the wedding celebrations of an apparent extremist activist. It showed the groom and wedding celebrants brandishing firearms, knives and firebombs, taking it in turns to stab the picture of a Palestinian toddler who was murdered in an arson attack on his family’s home in the West Bank village of Duma in July. The video clip has generated outrage, with Yediot Ahronot calling it a “vile dance” and Israel Hayom, the “wedding of hatred.” Israel Radio news says that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed disgust and said that the “appalling pictures showed the true face of a group that endangers Israeli society.” Writing in Yediot Ahronot, Yoaz Hendel says “There is no difference between them and the Muslim lunatics around us. The only difference is us—Israel’s ability to fight those phenomena without balking.”
Meanwhile, Maariv highlights an announcement by the Shin Bet domestic security agency yesterday, that it uncovered a 25-strong Hamas cell in the West Bank, which had been recruited by Hamas’ military wing in Gaza. The cell was actively planning suicide bombings in Israel and a makeshift explosives laboratory was uncovered. Noam Amir says that the case demonstrates the split between Hamas’ political wing in Gaza, which is trying to “defer the next war as long as possible in order to rebuild its infrastructure,” and its military wing which is redoubling efforts to attack Israel.
Israel Radio news says that Israel’s Energy Ministry has given the go-ahead to export natural gas from the Tamar offshore field to Egypt, in a lucrative agreement.
