The Times covers the latest attacks yesterday on Israelis, focusing on the stabbing of an Israeli policeman in Jerusalem by a Palestinian assailant. The attacker was shot dead at the scene. In addition, an IDF soldier was lightly hurt in a stabbing in the West Bank, while two Israelis were hurt earlier in the day in a shooting attack at the Hizme crossing near Jerusalem. At least 21 Israelis have been killed during the current wave of attacks since the beginning of October.
The Telegraph online reports that Israeli authorities yesterday demolished the West Bank home of a Palestinian terrorist who killed an Israeli husband and wife in front of their children in a drive-by shooting in the West Bank in October. Israel has recently stepped up the destruction of terrorists’ homes as a deterrent to future would-be attackers.
The Telegraph, Independent and the online edition of the Guardian all report that Israeli authorities have made several arrests in connection with a Jewish terror group responsible for an arson attack in the West Bank village of Duma in July, which killed three members of a Palestinian family. No further details of the case have been released in the partial lifting of a gag order yesterday.
The online editions of the Guardian and Telegraph both say that senior government ministers believe that the campaign to defeat ISIS could take a further two years. The Times online covers comments by a Syrian opposition leader, who said that rebel forces will support the efforts of the UK and its allies against ISIS, but must first agree a ceasefire with President Assad, as they are currently fully engaged battling government troops.
The Guardian online reports that a number of cultural events in Iran have recently forcibly cancelled by conservative elements and that President Rouhani is under pressure to end the trend.
In the Israeli media, Yediot Ahronot, Maariv and Haaretz all lead with the announcement yesterday that arrests have been made in the case of the Duma killings. The reports say that the unspecified number of arrests are mainly Jewish teenagers, but no further details have yet been cleared for publication. However, Maariv says that security officials remain downbeat over the prospects of indictments, as the suspects are well versed in concealing information under interrogation.
Israel Hayom and Yediot Ahronot in particular prominently report the terror attacks yesterday which saw several Israelis wounded. In particular, Israel Hayom highlights that the shooting at the Hizme checkpoint near Jerusalem which injured two people, was perpetrated by an officer in the Palestinian security forces. Israel Radio news also reports that an Israeli car came under fire yesterday evening just north of Jerusalem. Nobody was injured in the attack, in which at least ten bullets are thought to have been fired.
Israel Radio news also says that Turkey has expressed an interest in purchasing natural gas from Israel, in light of Ankara’s dispute with Russia over the jet Turkish forces downed last week. Diplomatic relations between Israel and Turkey were cut in 2009 and Turkey’s President Erdogan has since expressed hostility towards Israel.
