Media Summary
09/09/2014
The main item on Israel this morning covers the conviction in a Tel Aviv courtroom yesterday of a cult leader found guilty of numerous sex crimes. The Times and Independent both report that Goel Ratzon, who had 21 ‘wives’ and dozens of children, committed rape, incest and other offences for decades. A date for Ratzon’s sentencing has not yet been set.
The Telegraph online reports that the head of the Arab League yesterday called on members to confront ISIS “militarily and politically,” indicating support for a US-led coalition against the extremist Islamist group which has captured large swathes of land in Syria and Iraq. Meanwhile, the Times claims that the UK could join the US in air strikes against ISIS positions in Iraq next month.
Meanwhile, the Independent i reports comments made by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, who threatened to dissolve the Palestinian unity government backed by Hamas unless the organisation backs sole PA authority in Gaza.
In what the Financial Times describes as a rare admission of ill-health, it is widely reported this morning that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei underwent prostate surgery. The routine procedure is also covered by the Guardian, Metro and the online edition of the Independent. However, the Times raises the question of who will eventually succeed Khamenei with no obvious heir apparent. Khamenei has staunchly upheld clerical rule in Iran and takes a typically anti-US and Western stance on matters of state.
In the Israeli media, both Yediot Ahronot and Israel Hayom lead with reports that Israel is helping the US-led campaign against ISIS by providing intelligence to the United States. This apparently comprises both satellite imaging of ISIS positions and intelligence on the terror group’s personnel. However, the reports say that Hebrew markings have been removed from documents in order not to irk Arab members of the nascent anti-ISIS coalition.
Maariv’s top story is a warning from Indian security officials that al-Qaeda may be planning at attack on Israeli tourists in India during the upcoming Jewish holidays. Israeli and Indian forces are reportedly cooperating over the issue. The story is also covered prominently by Yediot Ahronot.
Also in Yediot Ahronot, Itamar Eichner elaborates on a story which emerged yesterday, that Egypt’s President al-Sisi suggested that the Palestinian Authority (PA) take control of a large section of northern Sinai, which together with the Gaza Strip, would become a demilitarised Palestinian state. PA President Mahmoud Abbas apparently rejected the suggestion out of hand.
Meanwhile, both Makor Rishon and Israel Radio news report that an Israeli soldier on the Golan Heights was lightly wounded in the leg yesterday by gunfire from across the Syrian border. The IDF is apparently checking to see whether the gunfire was accidental stray fire or a deliberate attack.
