The Financial Times outlines the danger to Israel posed by Islamists, including ISIS on the Syrian border, with the Syrian army having almost entirely lost control of the area and the United Nations peacekeeping force in danger of collapse. The Telegraph and Times both cover how the American journalist Steven Sotloff, who was beheaded by ISIS in Syria this week, managed to hide his Jewish identity and Israeli citizenship from his captors.

Meanwhile, the Independent online suggests that British citizens who have joined Islamist groups in Syria are becoming increasingly frustrated at fighting each other rather than the Assad regime. The Guardian and Times report that Prime Minister David Cameron suggested that the UK could carry out air strikes against ISIS in Syria even without Assad’s consent.

The Guardian says that Israel has charged the man who they believe was the mastermind behind the kidnap and murder of three Jewish Israeli teenagers in June. The abduction shocked and galvanised Israel and contributed to the atmosphere which preceded Operation Protective Edge. Both the Telegraph and Independent report that the Palestinian Authority (PA) yesterday said it will cost £4.7 billion to rebuild the Gaza Strip in the wake of Operation Protective Edge.

The Daily Express says that David Cameron has condemned the sharp rise in anti-Semitic attacks in the UK during the past two months. Cameron commented that “no disagreements on politics” can justify such incidents, with the Gaza conflict an apparent trigger to the spike in attacks. A Daily Express editorial also condemns the rise in anti-Semitic incidents. Meanwhile, in the Telegraph, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles writes that the British public must fight intolerance, including anti-Semitism.

The Times reports that Israel’s former-President Shimon Peres met Pope Francis and called for the establishment of a “united religious charter” in which prominent faith leaders would reject violence in the name of religion.

In the Israeli media, the top story in Maariv and also a major item in Haaretz and Israel Radio news is the announcement that Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has decided not to launch a police investigation against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the so-called “Bibi Tours” allegations. A Channel Ten investigative report claimed that Netanyahu double-billed for two trips abroad while serving as a regular Knesset member.

In Yediot Ahronot, Yossi Yehoshua pens a lengthy analysis of the threat posed by Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border. He says that while IDF reservist training has been cut, Hezbollah has been investing heavily in weaponry and training, concluding that Hezbollah’s “firing capability stands at 1,000 per day—and Israel does not have a satisfactory response to this.”

Meanwhile, Israel Hayom’s top story claims that 10 Arab Israeli citizens are currently fighting for ISIS. Israel Radio news says that Prime Minister Netanyahu yesterday sent his condolences to the family of beheaded journalist Steven Sotloff, a dual US-Israeli citizen. Netanyahu said that Sotloff was murdered because he was a symbol of Western civilization.
