Despite Israeli soldier’s death on Lebanon border, neither side is seeking conflict, by Amos Harel

The shooting that resulted in the death of an Israeli soldier on the border with Lebanon on Sunday evening is unlikely to lead to a broader conflagration in violence between Israel and Lebanese forces.

The soldier, Master Sgt. Sholmi Cohen, 31, was killed by gunfire that came from the Lebanese side of the border. The shooter was evidently a Lebanese soldier.

This is the first incident of its kind on the Lebanese border in over three years. In August 2010, a Lebanese soldier shot and killed Lt. Col. (res.) Dov Harari, a commander of a reserve infantry battalion, near the border by Kibbutz Manara. The incident occurred while Israel Defense Forces soldiers were trimming trees near the border fence. Lebanese soldiers arrived on the scene and opened fire, killing Harari and a injuring a company commander.

The IDF will attempt to find out if the shooter on Sunday evening was acting of his own volition, or if he received an order from superior officers in the Lebanese army or Hezbollah.
